Surah An-Naba (78)

...

Surat al-Baqarah

1. The Prophet, (saw), said: ‘Everything has a hump, and the hump of the Qur’an is Surat al-Baqara; if anyone recites it in his house during the night no devil will enter it for three nights; if anyone recites it in his house during the day-time no devil will enter it for three days.’ Ibn Hibban Tabarani and Baihaqi transmittted it from Sahl bin Sa’d, for whom Allah’s (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.

2. The Throne Verse (2:255): The Prophet (saw) said: There is a verse in Surat al-Baqara which is the chief verse of the Qur’an and when it is recited in a house in which there is a devil he will certainly get out of it: It is the Throne verse.’ Al-Hakim, and Baihaqi transmitted it from Abu Huraira, for whom Allah’s (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.

3. The last verses of Surat al-Baqara: The Prophet (saw) said: ‘Allah (swt) finished Surat al-Baqara with two verses which He has given me from His Treasure which is under the Throne: so learn them and teach them to your womenfolk and children, for they are a blessing, a recitation and a supplication.’ al-Hakim transmitted it from Abu Dharr, for whom Allah’s (swt) Good Pleasure is prayed.

Verses from the Qur'an
Verily We revealed the reminder (Qur'an) and We are its guardian. (Al Hijr, ayah no.9)

Alif Lam Meem. This is the book whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who ward off evil. (Al Baqarah, ayah no.1&2)

Falsehood cannot come to it from before nor from behind it. (It is) a revelation from the All-Wise, the owner of All-Praise. (Fussilat, ayah no. 42)

If we had caused this Qur'an to descend upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, bent asunder by the fear of Allah. Such similitudes we give mankind so that he may ponder. (Al Hashr, ayah no. 21)

Traditions of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
a. Uthman Radiallahu anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "The best amongst you is he who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Bukhari)

b. Abu Saeed Khudri Radiallahu anhu narrates that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "Allah says: "If anybody finds no time for my remembrance and for begging favours of Me, because he remains busy with the Holy Qur'an, I shall give him more than what I give all those who beg favours of Me". The superiority of the word of Allah over all other words is like the superiority of Allah over the entire creation. (Tirmizi)

c. Aisha Radiallahu anha narrates that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam once said: "One who is well versed in the Qur'an will be in the company of those angels who are scribes, noble and righteous, and one who falters in reading the Qur'an, and has to exert hard for learning, gets double the reward." (Bukhari)

d. Abdullah ibn Umar Radiallahu anhu reports that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "On the day of judgement, it will be said to the man devoted to the Qur'an, 'Go on reciting the Qur'an and continue ascending the storeys of paradise and recite in the slow manner you had been reciting in the worldly life. Your final abode will be where you reach at the time you recite the last ayah (verse)." (Ahmed, Tirmizi ,Abu Dawood)

e. Umar ibn Khattab Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "Undoubtedly through this book Allah exalts some people and abases others." (Muslim)

f. Ibn Masood Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "If anyone recites a letter from the Qur'an, he will be credited with one virtue, and a virtue gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif Lam Mîm is one letter, but Alif is one letter, Lam is one letter and Meem is one letter." (Tirmizi)

g. Ibn Abbas Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "He who has nothing of the Holy Qur'an in his heart is like a ruined house." (Tirmizi)

h. Abu Lubabah Bashir bin Abdul Mundhar Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "He who does not recite the Qur'an in a melodious voice is not of us." (Abû Dawûd)

i. Abu Musa Al Ashari Radiallahu anhu reported that the prophet of Allah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: "Retain and safeguard the Holy Qur'an in your memory. By the one in whose hands is my life, it (the Qur'an) slips more quicker away from one than a camel from its fetters." (Bukhari & Muslim)

Narrations regarding our Pious Predeccessors
* Uthman Radiallahu anhu used to fast during the day and spend the whole night in salah apart from getting a little sleep during the first third of the night. It is well known that he used to recite the entire Qur'an in one rakat at a time.

* Qatadah Radiallahu anhu used to recite the whole Qur'an every three nights in the month of Ramadhan but during the last ten nights, he used to finish the whole Qur'an every night.

* Imam Shafi'i Rahmatullah alaihi used to recite the Qur'an about 60 times during the days and nights of Ramadhan.

Explanation
The Qur'an and its beautiful teachings has flooded the world filling every nook (corner).

It serves as a suit for every era of soup (for every era when man is faced with difficulty, his solutions lie in the Qur'an and Sunnah).

For a group of pious Ulama to scoop (to extract) solutions to the peoples problems from the Qur'an's teachings which is clearer than a brook (stream).

Such a root, the Qur'an is original and free from any errors.

Its melody is better than a flute, keeping everyone glued, the Qur'an with its beautiful words and meanings, its melodious tune enraptures every true believer.

Its authenticity one can never dispute, its food for a hungry man's mood, it is guidance for those who seek the truth.

There are three important factors to take into consideration when memorising the Qur'an.
1. The new lesson (also known as sabaq or dars)
2. The previous day's lesson.
3. Revision (also known as Muraja'ah, dor)

Questions and Answers
Q - What is the best time to memorise the new lesson?
A - The best time to learn the new lesson is when one's mind is quite relaxed. Generally this is at the time of Fajr (the morning prayer) and after the Magrib salah (the prayer after sunset).

Q - What is the best method to use in memorising one's new lesson?
A - One of the most effective methods to use in memorising the new lesson is as follows: Before commencing the actual procedure of memorisation, read the new lesson at least three or four times. This will prepare the student mentally for the lesson, as well as give him the crux of the lesson. Secondly, memorise verse by verse (ayah after ayah). Do not precede to the next verse if you have not memorised the previous one properly. Be very observant when memorising the lesson.

Q - How should one memorise a verse which is extremely long eg. Verse 282 of Surah Al-Imran (Chapter on the family of Imran)?
A - If the verse is very long, it is most advisable to memorise it in portions, eg. By memorising small portions of the verse. Once the entire verse has been memorised, one would be capable of reciting it fluently.

Q - Is it advisable for students to memorise their lessons by listening to cassettes?
A - It is advisable for students to listen to their new lesson on cassette then to begin memorising it. However, a more approved method is where the ustadh (teacher) himself recites the new lesson to the student and thereafter the student memorises his lesson.

Q - Are there any special benefits in listening to cassettes by the student?
A - From the many special benefits here are a few:
* Listening to these cassettes creates a greater urge and fervour to learn eg. A student loves to listen to the recital of the Qur'an by Sheikh Abdul Rahman As-Sudais, now by him listening to the recitation, this enhances the desire of learning.
* The student gets more familiar with the method of recital.
* The student tends to remember his lesson for a longer period of time.
NB. The effort of the student is still of utmost importance.

Q - Many students keep mentioning that certain chapters of the Qur'an are extremely difficult to memorise eg. Surah As Saffat. Please advise us.
A - These are merely statements of ignorance. Psychology proves when a person retains such statements and takes them to heart, one is bound to find the lesson difficult to memorise. The clarity of mind plays an extremely important role when memorising a lesson.

Q - Can you enlighten us on the importance of reciting one's lesson to the teacher before commencing the actual process of memorisation?
A - The importance of reciting the new lesson by the teacher cannot be over emphasized. One is definitely saved from many errors which could arise because of negligence. The student is made aware of any weakness regarding the application of the laws of tajweed etc.

Q - How much of the new lesson should a student learn?
A - This depends mainly on the student himself. The amount varies from 1/3 of a page to 2 pages and more.

NB. Quality is of utmost importance, not quantity.

Thus far most of the questions dealt with the 'new lesson' (sabaq). Hereunder follow questions pertaining to the 'previous day's lessons', revision (dor, Muraj'ah) as well as miscellaneous advice and noteworthy points.

Q - Students find great difficulty in remembering their previous day's lesson. What is the main cause for this?
A - The main cause for students forgetting their previous day's lesson is negligence.

Hereunder follow some methods which will assist the students. As soon as the student recites his new lesson to the teacher from memory, he must revise the very same lesson instantly at least 4 to 5 times. The very same method should be adopted before one learns one's revision (i.e. the repetition of the new lesson).

Q - Students tend to make a lot of mistakes when reciting their revision. What is the cause of this?
A - Mistakes are unavoidable. It must be remembered that memorising the Qur'an takes different stages eg. First the student has to memorise the new lesson, revise it etc. It is like a building. The foundation has to be firm. Then only is it possible for the building to stand. Similarly, once the student makes the effort to learn his new lesson (sabaq) correctly, his revision becomes easier.

To decrease the rate of mistakes, the teacher can set a target for the student eg. the student is not permitted to make more than 3 or 4 mistakes in a surah (chapter).

Q - What is the recommended amount of revision that a student should recite daily?
A - The Qur'an consists of 30 parts, it would be highly recommended that every student recites at least one part every day.

Q - How does a student remember those texts/ places in the Qur'an which are very often repeated? (Mutashabihat)
A - One can only remember these places after excessive learning.

Q - Is it necessary for a student to learn from one print of the Qur'an or can he learn from different prints of the Qur'an?
A - It is very important that a student learns from one print of the Qur'an, because the student generally visualises his lessons. Now if he starts learning from different prints, very soon he is going to be confused.
NB. This also leads to a lot of strain on the student's mind.

Q - Does one learn better by reciting audibly or inaudibily?
A - This depends mainly on the student. Some students prefer to learn aloud whereas others prefer to learn in a low voice. The advantage of reciting aloud is that one tends to read more clearly and will detect any mistake one makes easily.

Virtues of Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al `Imran

Virtues of Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al `Imran

Imam Ahmad said that Abu Nu`aym narrated to them that Bishr bin Muhajir said that `Abdullah bin Buraydah narrated to him from his father, "I was sitting with the Prophet and I heard him say,

«تَعَلَّمُوا سُورَةَ الْبَقَرَةِ فَإِنَّ أَخْذَهَا بَرَكَةٌ، وَتَرْكَهَا حَسْرَةٌ، وَلَا تَسْتَطِيعُهَا الْبَطَلَة»

(Learn Surat Al-Baqarah, because in learning it there is blessing, in ignoring it there is sorrow, and the sorceresses cannot memorize it.)

He kept silent for a while and then said,

(Learn Surat Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran because they are two lights and they shade their people on the Day of Resurrection, just as two clouds, two spaces of shade or two lines of (flying) birds. The Qur'an will meet its companion in the shape of a pale-faced man on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened. The Qur'an will ask him, 'Do you know me' The man will say, 'I do not know you.' The Qur'an will say, 'I am your companion, the Qur'an, which has brought you thirst during the heat and made you stay up during the night. Every merchant has his certain trade. But, this Day, you are behind all types of trade.' Kingship will then be given to him in his right hand, eternal life in his left hand and the crown of grace will be placed on his head. His parents will also be granted two garments that the people of this life could never afford. They will say, 'Why were we granted these garments' It will be said, 'Because your son was carrying the Qur'an.' It will be said (to the reader of the Qur'an), 'Read and ascend through the levels of Paradise.' He will go on ascending as long as he recites, whether reciting slowly or quickly.)''

Ibn Majah also recorded part of this Hadith from Bishr bin Al-Muhajir, and this chain of narrators is Hasan, according to the criteria of Imam Muslim.

A part of this Hadith is also supported by other Hadiths. For instance, Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Umamah Al-Bahili said that he heard the Messenger of Allah say,

(Read the Qur'an, because it will intercede on behalf of its people on the Day of Resurrection. Read the two lights, Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran, because they will come in the shape of two clouds, two shades or two lines of birds on the Day of Resurrection and will argue on behalf of their people on that Day.)

The Prophet then said,

« اقْرَأُوا الْبَقَرَةَ فَإِنَّ أَخْذَهَا بَرَكَةٌ وَتَرْكَهَا حَسْرَةٌ وَلَا تَسْتَطِيعُهَا الْبَطَلَة»

(Read Al-Baqarah, because in having it there is blessing, and in ignoring there is a sorrow and the sorceresses cannot memorize it.)

Also, Imam Muslim narrated this Hadith in the Book of Prayer

Imam Ahmad narrated that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said that the Prophet said,

«يُؤْتَى بِالقُرْآنِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَأَهْلِهِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ بِهِ تَقْدَمُهُم سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ وَآلُ عِمْرَان»

(On the Day of Resurrection the Qur'an and its people who used to implement it will be brought forth, preceded by Surat Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran.)

An-Nawwas said, "The Prophet set three examples for these two Surahs and I did not forget these examples ever since. He said,

«كَأَنَّهُمَا غَمَامَتَانِ، أَوْ ظُلَّتَانِ سَودَاوَانِ بَيْنَهُمَا شَرْقٌ، أَوْ كَأَنَّهُمَا فِرْقَانِ مِنْ طَيْرٍ صَوَافَّ، يُحَاجَّانِ عَنْ صَاحِبِهِمَا»

(They will come like two clouds, two dark shades or two lines of birds arguing on behalf of their people.)

It was also recorded in Sahih Muslim and At-Tirmidhi narrated this Hadith, which he rendered Hasan Gharib.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Nawwas ibne-Sam'an Alkalabi Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates: I heard Nabi Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam saying: The Qur'an with its people who acted according to it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, led by Surah Al-Baqarah and Ale'lmran.
(Muslim)

Abu Hurairah Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: Do not make your houses graveyards (but fill your homes with the remembrance of Allah with Salat and the recitation of the Qur'an). Indeed, Shaitan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.
(Muslim)

Abu Umamah AI-Bahili Radiyallahu. 'anhu narrates: I heard Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam saying: Recite the Qur'an, because on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recited it. Recite the two shining ones, Surah Al-Baqarah and Ale'lmran for these will come on the Day of Resurrection as two clouds or two shades or two flocks of birds in rows pleading for those who recited them. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, because its reciting, memorizing, and understanding are blessings; and giving it up is grief and regret. The wicked are unable to exploit it. Mu'awiyah ibne-Salam says that it has been reported to him that by wicked people is meant magicians.
(Muslim)

Abu Hurairah Radiyalahu 'anhu narrates that Rasulullah sallalahu 'alaihi wasallam said: There is one verse in Surah AlBaqarah that is the chief of all the verses of the Qur'an. Never is this verse recited in a house in which Shaitan is present except that it flees from it. This verse is Ayatul kursi.

Virtues of Surah Al kahf

Abu Darda' Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Nabi sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: The one who recites the three verses of the beginning of Surah AI-Kahf will be protected from the trial of Dajjal. (Tirmidhi)

Abu Darda' Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Nabi sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: He who memorizes the first ten verses of Surah AI-Kahf will be protected from the trial of Dajjal. In another narration, it is the last ten verses of Siirah AI-Kahf (Muslim)

Thawban Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Nabi sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: The one who recites the last ten verses of Surah Al Kahf, this will indeed be for him a protection from Dajjal. (Amalul Yaumi wal Lailah by Nasai).

Ali Radiyallahu 'anhu narrates that Rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: He who recites Surah AI-Kahf on Friday, will be protected from all kinds of trials for eight days, and if Dajjal appears, (during these eight days) he would be even saved from him.
(Tafsir ibne-KathTr)

And the one who recites the last ten verses of it, even if the Dajjal appears, the Dajjal will not be able to overpower him. (Mustadrak Hakim)

Holy Qur'an should be recited daily, Virtues of Various Surah

VIRTUES OF RECITING THE HOLY QUR' AAN, AND CERTAIN OF ITS SURAHS AND VERSES

The Holy Qur'aan should be recited daily. Hereunder Is mentioned some Ahadeeth with regards the excellence of reciting the Holy Qur'aan:

Recite the Holy Qur'aan for It will come as an Intercessor for Its reciter on the Day of Judgement. .
Allah Ta'ala says: "If. anyone finds no time for My remembrance and for begging My favours due to remaining engaged In the recitation of the Qur'aan, I shall give him more than what I give to all those who beg favours of Me." The superiority of the Word of Allah over all other words Is like the superiority of Allah over the entire creation. .

Learn the Qur'aan and recite It, because the example of one who learns the Qur'aan, reads It and recites;lt in Tahajjud Is like an open bag full of musk whose fragrance permeates the entire place. And the person who has learnt the Qur'aan but sleeps while the Qur'aan is In the heart is like a bag full of musk but with Its mouth closed.

I Whoever recites one letter of the Book of Allah, for him will be
tone hasanah (blessing); and one blessing Is equal 1.0 tenfold the
like thereof in Its reward. I do not say that Allf Laam Meem Is
one letter. but Allf is one letter. Laam Is one letter and Meem Is
lone letter. .

Envy Is not permitted except in respect of two persons - one
whom Allah blesses with the recitation of the Qur'aan and he

remains engaged in It day and night, and the other Is one who is given abundance of wealth by Allah and he spends It (In Allah's path) day and night. .
It will be said to the reclter of the Qur'aan (on the Day of Qlyaamah): "Go on reciting the Qur'aan and continue ascending the stages of Jannah; and recite It In the slow manner as you had been reciting It In the worldly life: your final abode will be where you reach at the time of the last aayah of your recitation.

One who recites the Qur'aan and he Is wen versed In it (i.e Its recitation), he will be in the company of those angels who are scribes, noble and righteous; and one who falters in Its recitation and has to exert himself, gets a double reward.

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH FAATIHAH

Some Ahadeeth pertaining to the excellence of Surah Faatihah:

The Surah Faatihah Is the greatest and most virtuous Surah of the Qur'aan; It consists of the Sab'a mathaani (seven verses which are repeatedly recited) and It (Surah Faatihah) represents the Grand Qur'aan.

I have been given the Faatihatu/ Kitaab (Opening Verses) from the treasures beneath the Throne.

Once while Jibreel (AS) was seated with Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu-alayhl-wasallam), he suddenly heard from above, a sound of (something) cracking. He lifted his head and said: "This Is an angel descending to the earth and never (before this) did he descend but this day." This angel greeted and said: "Be pleased with two (sources of) noor which no other Nabl before you had. been given: Fatihatu/ Kltaab and the Khawateem (Closing Two

Verses) of Surah Baqarah; you will not recite even one letter of these without being given a reward for It.

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH BAQARAH

The Shaytaan runs away from the house wherein Surah Baqarah is recited.

Recite Surah Baqarah for Its recitation is a source of blessings and its forsaking is a source of regret and only useless people are unable to recite ,it. .

Everything has a hump and the hump of the Qur'aan Is Surah Baqarah.

One who recites Surah Baqatah at night, the Shaytaan will not visit his home for three nights; and anyone who recites it In the day, the Shaytaan will not visit his home for three days.
I have been given the Surah Baqarah from the Lauhlm Mahfoozh (In particular).

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH BAQARAH AND AALE IMRAAN

Recite the two glittering Iustres/res - Baqarah and Aale Imraan; for these two will come on the Day of Qlyaamah as if they are two clouds or shelters or two rows of a flock of birds: they will quarrel (with Allah) to have their reclter forgiven.

THE EXCELLENCE OF AAYATUL KURSI

Aayatul Rursiis the greatest verse of the Qur'aan.

It is the leader of the verses of the Holy Qur'aan.
If Aayatul kursi is recited and blown on one's belongings or children or It is written and (the written copy) placed among one's belongings or hung (as a taweez) around the neck of one's
children, the Shaytaan will not dare to come even near such
belongings and the children.

THE EXCELLENCE OF THE LAST TWO VERSES OF SURAH BAQARAH

Reciting from Aamanar Rasoolu till the end of the Surah will prevent the Shaytaan from coming even near one's house.

Allah has completed the Surah Baqarah with such two verses that these have been given to me from the treasures kept beneath the Throne: so learn them and tead1 them to your wives and children for they are a source of mercy, a form of recitation and prayers.

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH AN'AAM

IT Is mentioned In the Hadeeth that when the Surah An'aam was
revealed, Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu-alayhl-wasallam) said A/hamdu/lllah. And then he said: "By Allah, so many angels came to convey this Surah that the corners of the heavens became covered with their great numbers.

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH KAHF

According to the Hadeeth:

Whoever recites It on the eve of Jumu'ah, It will provide a noor for him from one Jumu'ah till the following Jumu'ah.

Whoever recites It on the day of Jumu'ah, It will provide a noor for him from one Jumu'ah till the following Jumu'ah.
Anyone who recites Suratul Kahf on the eve of Jumu'ah, It will provide a light (noor) for him from where he Is till the Baltul Ateeq.

Whoever recites Suratul Kahf exactly as It was revealed, It will provide a light (noor) for him from where he Is till the Makkah.
Whoever recites the last ten verses of Suratul Kahf, and If DaJ)aal happens to reveal himself (during the reclter's life time), he will have no influence on him (the reclter).
Whoever continues to recite Suratul Rahf, it will provide a noor for him from where he Is stationed till Makkah on the Day of Qlyaamah.

Whoever recites the last ten verses of Suratul Rahf, and If DajJaal happens to reveal himself (during the reciter's life time), he will not be able to harm him at all.

Whoever commits to memory the first ten verses of Suratul Rahf, he will be safeguarded against the crisis of DaJJaal. Accord
Ing to one rlwayah the words whoever commits to memory ten verses have been mentioned. According to another the words last. ten verses Is mentioned. According to one rlwayah the words first three verses is also mentioned

Whoever sees Dajjaal, he should recite before him the opening ten verses of Surah Rahf for, (according to one riwaayah) these verses affords the reclter safety and protection against the fltnah of DajjaaL

THE EXCELLENCE OF SURAH TAA HAA, TAWAASEEN AND HAWAAMEEM
