Ṣalāh or Ṣalāt (Arabic: صلاة; pl. ṣalawāt) is practice of formal prayer of Islam. Its supreme importance for Muslims is indicated by its status as one of the Five Pillars of Sunni Islam and of the Ten Practices of the Religion of Shi'a Islam. Salah is a ritual prayer, having prescribed conditions, a prescribed procedure, and prescribed times that originally come Judaism.
Performing salah is obligatory for all adult Muslims, with a few dispensations for those for whom it would be difficult. To perform valid salah, Muslims must be in a state of ritual purity, which is mainly achieved by ritual ablution according to prescribed procedures. The place of prayer should be clean. In a few cases where blood is leaving the body, salah is forbidden until a later time.

1. What is the ruling on Muslims who do not perform solat?
Solat is compulsory and there is absolutely no doubt in its ruling as this ruling has been clearly stated in the Qur’an. Rasulullah s.a.w has also stated that Solat is the pillar of our religion and those who do not perform solat has destroyed his/her faith. Rasulullah also stated in another hadith that the difference between a Muslim and a non-Muslim is solat. Hence, it is feared that those who purposely do not perform solat may die in a state of Kufur. (die as a non-muslim)
2. Is it true that according to a Hadith, one does not have to perform the 5 daily prayers as one has already done wirid throughout the night?
It is extremely important to state and reiterate that a belief that one does not have to perform the 5 daily prayers because one has performed the wirid throughout the night is completely false and may cause those who believe in that statement to be murtad. This is because the 5 daily prayers are one of the pillars of Islam and those who deny it may become murtad.
3. What is the significance behind the different movements in the prayer?
The prayer as a whole has a significance of its own. The movements teach us discipline and according to some researches, certain movements have medical and physical benefits.
4. What is the meaning of the saying “assolaatu khairun min annawm” and why is it recited only during Subuh Azan?
The origin of that saying, which means; solat is better than sleep, came from a companion of the Prophet p.b.u.h named Bilal. He began adding it to the Azan when he noticed there were many muslims who were unable to wake up for the Subuh prayer. When the Prophet p.b.u.h heard it for the first time, he kept quiet. In the Science of Hadith, it is referred to as taqrir which means it is a consent from the Prophet p.b.u.h for the act or statement.
5. What is the reason behind the selawat for Prophet Ibrahim at the end of each prayer?
Nabi Ibrahim is also called as the Father of the Prophets. From him, came the line of prophets sent to Bani Israel, including Ishak, Ya'qub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun, Zakaria, Isa, and others. And our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w genealogy can be traced back to him. Hence, we give our proper salutations and respect to Nabi Ibrahim a.s, as how our Prophet taught us, that is at the end of each prayer.
6. What is the ruling on the recitation of iqamah before performing individual solat?
It is recommended to recite the iqamah before each and every solat, even if it is an individual solat. The Azan, however, is only recited to indicate the beginning of the time of solat.
7. What is sujud sahwi?
Sujud sahwi is a type of sujud performed to make up for any deficits in a solat caused by forgetfulness. There are three reasons for performing the sujud sahwi; due to extra steps, due to insufficient steps or due to doubt.
Sujud sahwi is performed after the tasyahhud akhir and before the salam and it is done twice. After the first one is performed, one sits just like one sits in between the two prostrations in a solat, reciting the same recitations and then one prostrates a second time and gives salam to end the whole
8. What is recited during sujud sahwi?
One may recite the zikir of a normal sujud in a prayer or one may recite the following:
“Subhanallazi ya yanamu wa la yashu"
. 9. What is one recommended to do when the Azan is being recited?
It is recommended for one to respond toeach sentence of the Azan by repeating slowly what the Bilal has recited, with the exception of the phrases “Hayya ‘alas Solah” and “Hayya ‘alal Falah” where it has to be recited with “La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illa Billah”.
10. What is the ruling on the recitation of Do’a Qunut in the Subuh prayer?
A number of scholars including those from the Syafi’i school of thought are of the view that the recitation of do’a qunut in Subuh prayer is a recommendation (sunnah) that should not be left out of the prayer. The prayer, however, is still considered valid even if one leaves it out, whether intentionally or not. According to a narration, when Imam Syafi’i travelled to Baghdad, he did not recite the do’a qunut in his Subuh prayer as he wanted to respect the beliefs of Imam Abu Hanifah’s followers. Imam Syafi’i’s act taught us that we should try our best to accommodate others as much as we can so long as it does not stray from our Islamic principles. Do’a qunut is considered as Sunnah Mu’akkadah where if a person leaves it out during prayer, he/she must perform the sujud sahwi after the tasyahhud akhir which is before the salam.
11. Is it permissible for a muslimah to teach her nephew how to perform the solat?
There are no restrictions for a muslimah to teach her nephew how to perform the solat. Furthermore, it is something that is recommended in Islam. However, if it is a paternal nephew, aurah must be observed. If it is a maternal nephew, there is no need to cover the aurah.
12. Is it permissible for one to perform solat as a gift to the deceased?
Performing solat and intending its rewards to be a gift to the deceased has absolutely no basis in Islam. Those who have passed away must be bathed, shrouded and be prayed upon. This prayer is called solat jenazah and it is a solat performed upon the body of the deceased and it has no ruku’ nor sujud as they are both only for Allah s.w.t and not for others.
Hence, instead of perfoming solat as a gift for the deceased, it is recommended instead for the family of the deceased to give sadaqah and to also strengthen the ties that were built by the deceased during his lifetime.
13. How does a person who does not have time due to work or school perform solat?
Solat is the second pillar of Islam. Hence, it is extremely important for Muslims to perform the solat as Rasulullah p.b.u.h has stated in his Hadith which means: “Whoever does not perform solat intentionally has destroyed his/ her faith”.
The timings of the five daily prayers have been specified by Allah s.w.t and one must therefore perform the solat on time. The wisdom behind these specified times is to educate Muslims to keep time properly, be organized and disciplined in their lives.
If a person’s limited or irregular break times, and there is no fixed break for solat, we would like to suggest the following:
1) Perform the ablution (wudhu’) before entering class or work.
2) When it is time for solat, excuse yourself for 5 minutes. Solat can be performed in only 5 minutes if only the compulsory conditions (movements) are performed. You may refer to books on fiqh or solat to find out which conditions are compulsory and which are not.
3) Look for a secluded area, an emergency staircase for example and make sure the area is dry. It is recommended that one look for it at an earlier time to avoid any delays.
4) Place a handkerchief or any clean material at the sujud area and take off your shoes. There is no need to bring a prayer mat.
5) Perform the solat.
In sya Allah, with the steps above, you are able to perform the solat on time and in a matter of minutes. There is no need to bring a songkok, prayer mat or other prayer materials. It is sufficient for one’s clothes to be clean and covering the AURAT.
14. How does one perform solat in a moving ship?
Solat can be combined if the period of travel is less than three days, one can therefore jamak and also perform qasar for the solat. Jamak means combining 2 solat, for example, performing Asar in the time of Zuhur or Zuhur in the time of Asar, or performing Isya’ in the time of Maghrib or Maghrib in the time of Isya’. However, it is not permissible to combine Asar with Maghrib or Isya’ with Subuh or Subuh with Zuhur. As for Qasar, it means shortening a 4 rakaat solat into 2 rakaat.
If the period of travel exceeds 3 days, it is therefore impermissible to jamak or qasar the solat. Hence, one must perform solat on time. Zuhur is approximately 10 minutes after the meridian passing of the Sun. Asar is approximately one hour before the sun sets. Maghrib is after the sunset. Isya’ is approximately 2 hours after the sun sets and Subuh is 1 hour before the sun rises.
As for the qiblat, one must try to find out the location of the qiblat. This can easily be done by using the spherical trigonometry formula with the ship’s coordinates and Makkah’s coordinates which is 39 E, 21 N. If the ship changes course during the solat, your solat is still valid and there is no need to qadha’ as you have already faced the qiblat initially.
15. Is there a way one can perform solat whilst driving, especially for cab drivers Does one have to perform wudhu again if he/she were to accidentally touch someone who is not mahram??
The main pillar of Islam is solat, as mentioned by Rasulullah s.a.w. It is the most important aspect after Syahadah. Hence, Muslims cannot deliberately miss solat, or do any actions that will cause one to miss solat.
Driving or ferrying passengers does not constitute an excuse for missing solat. One must try hard not to take passengers when one is sure that by taking them one will miss the solat altogether. Solat cannot be performed while driving because in solat one needs to bend for sujud and ruku'. A driver certainly cannot do that. Also, to perform solat while travelling, one has to ensure that during the first takbiratul ihram one must face the Qiblat, and that is difficult to ensure on the road.
Hence, our advise is to try avoid taking passengers when Maghrib is near. It is safer to perform the solat first and then begin taking passengers. In that way, our earnings will be blessed by Allah insya Allah.
According to the Syafi'i school of thought, touching non-mahram invalidates one's wudhu', whether it is done intentionally or not.
16. How does one perform the prayer in an aeroplane or when on a holiday tour that lasts the whole day?
If space can be found on the aeroplane to conduct prayers, then one must face the kiblat. Since this is quite difficult, one can perform solat seating down, but must qadha’ that solat after touch down. When one is travelling, prayers can be shorten (qasar) and joined together (jamak). So if one is on a whole day holiday tour, one can perform Zohor prayer during Asar time, and Maghrib in Isyak time. But one cannot pray Zohor and Asar during Maghrib or Isyak time.
17. Can a person perform the solat while carrying a stomach bag which is a tool that helps to dispose waste?
Yes, one is allowed to carry his/her stomach bag during prayer since there is no excuse for not performing prayers. What he/she can do is that when he/she performs ablution, he/she makes the niat when washing the face.
And immediately after that ablution he/she performs solat. That ablution is only valid for one solat. To perform another solat, he/she must take another ablution.
18. How does a person suffering from stroke perform the solat?
Stroke has varied effects. There are those whose bodies are partially paralyzed, there are also those who are paralyzed at certain parts of the body and so on so forth. If the person suffering from stroke is unable to use his/ her own hand to “istinjak”, it is an obligation for another person to assist this person. If there is noone to assist to the extent that the time for solat is almost over, it is, nevertheless, still compulsory for he/ she to perform solat. However, when there is an opportunity to “istinjak”, one must perform that solat again as the initial one was invalid as “istinjak” had not been performed.
The same hukum applies for performing ablution (wudhu’), another person may assist to wash one’s face, hands and so on so forth.
For performing the solat, if one is unable to perform certain movements of the solat like the ruku’ or the sujud, one may signal that one is performing that particular move by slightly bowing one’s head. If one is unable to stand, one may perform it sitting down. If one is unable to sit down, one may perform it while lying down. If the whole body is paralyzed, one may perform solat with one’s eyes by moving the eyes in accordance to the solat movements.
19. How does a person suffering from leg injury and is unable to bend it perform solat?
Performing solat in a sitting position is only allowed for those who are unable stand or bend their legs. Only the physical conditions (rukun fi’li), which are the physical movements of the solat that cannot be performed may be performed in a sitting position. Other movements must be performed as per normal.
For example, if one is unable to prostate (sujud) but is still able to stand and ruku’, it is then compulsory to stand and ruku’ as per normal. One may then sit and bow as low as possible when performing the sujud. There is no need to place a table in front to rest the face on.
20. How does one know the ending time for each of the five daily prayers?
The ending of each prayer is the start of the next prayer. This is what our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w taught us, except for Subuh, in which it will end with sunrise, and not Zohor. But we are very much encouraged to perform our solat as early as possible.
21. What is the information to input into the prayer time software?
Since Singapore is a small island, one can practically use any coordinates on the main island. The difference will not be more than 1 minute.The Z angle for Subuh is 110, Isyak 108, Zohor about 2 minutes after Meridian Passing, Maghrib and Syuruk when the Sun's lower and upper limb touch the horizon respectively.
22. Is it true that it is not allowed to perform solat Asar if the sky has turned reddish and the sun is nearing the horizon but has not set yet?
It always recommended to perform the solat as soon as possible which is right after the Azan. However, if one is unable to do so due to certain reasons, it is still permissible to perform solat Asar as long as it is still not time for the next solat, which is Maghrib. If one does not perform solat intentionally, one must qadha’ as a number of ulama are of the opinion that it is compulsory to qadha’ missed solat.
Hence, as long as it is not the time for Maghrib yet, it is still permissible to perform Asar
23. If one is uncertain about depending only on a watch as there is nowhere to hear the Azan from, what should one do?
It is a good practise that you give an allowance of 10 to 15 minutes after the stipulated prayer times to perform your solat or break your fast. That way, you will be assured that you are praying or breaking your fast at its.
24. What is the direction of kiblat from Singapore?
The Kiblat direction in Singapore is 293 degrees, clockwise direction from North.
25. How does one determine the location of the qiblat without using a compass?
Determining the qiblat in Singapore is fairly easy, even without a compass. Do look for the location where the sun sets, which is in the west. Then, move your body slightly to the right from where the sun is setting. Hence, you are now facing the qiblat and this is generally the qiblat for those in Singapore.
26. How can one accurately determine the direction of kiblat from any part of the world?
You may use the normal bearing compass, For example if you are in Australia, let the needle coincides with the North-South marking on the compass, and determinie the angle 295 on that compass.
If you have done your ijtihad with considerable effort and found out later that your previous direction is less than 180 degrees from the right direction, then you need not repeat your prayers. However, if it is totally the opposite direction, which means that the difference is more than 180 degrees, then you must repeat your prayers.
27. Are muslims supposed to visualize the Ka'abah or its Black Stone during prayer?
The Blackstone is called Hajar Aswad. It occupies a small part on the eastern corner of Kaabah. It is encouraged for Muslims to kiss the Hajar Aswad after each circumbulation (Tawaf) of Kaabah. However, if there is a big crowd around it, it is not encouraged to kiss it. It is sufficient by just by waving at it. The Prophet, peace be upon him, did both.
I explained all this to throw light on the purpose of Hajar Aswad in Kaabah. Muslims do not worship Hajar Aswad. Nor do Muslims worship Kaabah. In a famous story of Caliph Umar bin Al-Khattab, the second caliph and a Prominent companion of the Prophet, it was reported that he said the following words before kissing Hajar Aswad: "I know that you are just a stone, nothing more. If not that I saw the Prophet kissed you, I will not kiss you.'

Hmm...I've decided to blog a bit about solat today. I have to ask myself (& those who are reading this post) a few questions about solat in this post.
1. When the word 'solat' comes to your mind, what is your first thought about solat?
-Hmm... Solat is compulsory?
2. What is your definition of solat?
-Hmm... I know it is something to do with 'perbuatan' and 'perkataan', but I forgot the technical definition of solat, honestly.
3. How ideal should the solat be?
-Hmm... Solat should always be done the moment the prayer calls are done. (I'll have to work to improve on this for I have a bad habit of leaving it late)
-All criterias of solat should be met from 'niat' until 'salam' completely (referring to rukun solat)
-If possible, do supererogatory (sunat) prayers as well such as prayers before and after Zohor
4. Do you feel that you have fulfilled the necessary criteria?
-No, I feel otherwise as there are a lot of things to be improved in solat.
5. Do you always feel sorry for yourself if you missed the prayer time (if any)?
-Yes, I do. I will always feel if I hadn't do this and that, I wouldn't miss my solat.
6. What will you do after this? What steps will you take to improve your solat?
-I'll have to apply willpower onto myself just to make the effort to go into the toilet and take my ablution as the time for prayers are called. But, I still need guidance from family and friends so that I won't stray from my target.
As I end this post, a thought comes to mind: Solat is an assignment for life. If we don't meet the necessary criteria for solat, our assignment (solat) will be rejected by the moderator (Allah). Thus, essential stuff other than solat will be rejected as well.
That is why the first question that will be asked in the hereafter is 'solat'. If you or me fail the 'solat' question, we will be filled with so much regret for not following the proper criteria. Therefore, I remind myself and other Muslims to improve our solat. Do it because of Allah, not because of something/someone else. Insya-Allah.
